Handling fireworks and pets requires careful planning and consideration to ensure your furry friends stay safe and comfortable. Here are essential tips to help manage fireworks around pets:
- Create a Safe Space: Prepare a secure and comfortable area indoors where your pets can retreat during fireworks displays. This space should be quiet, cozy, and away from windows to minimize noise and light. We’ve found some like the bathtub.
- Identification and Supervision: Ensure your pets are wearing proper identification tags with updated contact information in case they escape due to fear. Supervise them closely if they need to be outside, even in a fenced yard. If prone to escape, PAY CLOSE ATTENTION!
- Comfort and Distraction: Provide distractions such as toys, treats, or soothing music to help divert their attention from the noise of fireworks. Calming pheromone products, CBD, or snug-fitting garments like anxiety wraps may also help reduce stress. Alternately, we play action movies up a little louder than normal to help with the noise.
- Stay Calm and Reassuring: Pets can pick up on their owners’ anxiety, so remain calm and reassuring. Comfort them with gentle petting and soothing words to alleviate their fear.
- Avoid Exposure: If possible, avoid taking pets to firework displays or areas where fireworks are being set off. The loud noises and bright lights can be overwhelming and frightening for animals. Plan potty and walk times accordingly to avoid undue distress to your pet.
- Consult a Veterinarian: If your pet has a severe fear of fireworks, consult with your veterinarian. They may recommend medications or other strategies to help manage anxiety during fireworks events. CBD products are controversial for some, and extremely beneficial to others.
By taking these precautions and being mindful of your pet’s comfort and safety, you can help minimize the stress and anxiety that fireworks can cause for pets.
